Get in the Game: Playing Tennis and Pickleball at Any Age

Updated: Apr 19, 2023

Tennis and pickleball are sports enjoyed by millions of people all around the world, and for good reason. They're a great way to stay active, improve your physical fitness, and have fun with friends and family. If you're interested in getting started but don't know where to begin, don't worry – we've got you covered.

Get the right gear

Before you start playing, you'll need to make sure you have the right gear. This includes a racket, balls, and appropriate shoes. You don't need to spend a lot of money on your gear when you're just starting out, but make sure to invest in a decent racket that's the right size for you.

Find a court

Once you have your gear, you'll need to find a place to play. Look for a local park, community center, or club that has courts available for public use. Many tennis courts now offer pickleball as well. Some courts may require a reservation or a fee to use, so make sure to check before you head out.

Take a lesson

If you've never played before, it's a good idea to take a lesson from a qualified instructor. A tennis or pickleball lesson will teach you the basics of the game, including how to hold the racket, how to hit the ball, and how to serve. You can usually find lessons at your local community center or tennis club.

Practice, practice, practice

Like any sport, the key to getting better is practice. Try to play as often as you can, even if it's just for a few minutes at a time. Focus on developing your technique and improving your footwork. As you get more comfortable with the game, try playing with different partners to challenge yourself and improve your skills.

You'll probably find that you enjoy playing more if you pair up with other players who are reasonably close to your own skill level. Racquet sports use a numerical scale to rate players. Pickleball and tennis ratings both vary from 1.0 to 7.0, with a 1.0 rating for beginner players and a 7.0 rating reserved for the very best professional players. If you take a lesson, your instructor can assess your current skill level and give you a rating.

Have fun!

The most important thing when starting out playing tennis is to have fun! Don't get too caught up in winning or losing – focus on enjoying the game and spending time with friends and family. Tennis and pickleball are both great ways to stay active and meet new people, so make the most of your time on the court.

Racquet sports are inexpensive, and you can play at any age. With the right gear, a place to play, and a little bit of practice, you'll be enjoying yourself, making friends, improving your health and maybe even prolonging your life. So grab a racket, head to the court, and get ready to have some fun!
